How to Conduct a Responsible Competitor Landscape Review With OSINT
A fair, bounded approach to using public information for market research without invasive collection or unsupported claims.
Competitor research can clarify public positioning, product announcements, support models, and market changes. It becomes unreliable when public fragments are used to make claims about internal operations, people, or intent. A responsible landscape review starts with a defined business question and a limited source plan.
Use public sources for public questions
Official websites, documentation, public announcements, public events, and clearly attributed reporting can support a comparison of stated offerings and visible changes. Do not profile employees, collect private data, or infer confidential strategy from weak signals.

Preserve uncertainty
Record direct URLs, source dates, observation versus inference, and alternative explanations. A product page proves what was publicly presented at that time; it does not prove customer adoption, internal capability, or future plans.

The best landscape report is concise and fair: it separates facts from assumptions and gives decision makers a transparent view of its limits.
